‘Ropes’ Outdoor Ministry
The Ropes Challenge Climbing and Rappelling Tower, an outreach ministry of Gashland United Methodist Church, went into full operation on September 15, 1996. Since that time, thousands of youth from all over the Kansas City area have experienced the thrill of climbing, rappelling, and riding the zip-line on our tower. In addition to the tower, several outdoor adventure-course elements have also been added to various locations on the property to use for special team-building events.
The Ropes Challenge Tower is partially sponsored by Gashland United Methodist Church as part of a growing outdoor ministry. The church provides the land, parking, training rooms, restrooms, electricity, and liability insurance for the project. The cost of building and outfitting the tower was originally financed by Gary Green, the visionary of the Ropes Challenge Ministry. Our Certified Session Leaders also serve as our Ropes Challenge Committee and Board of Directors. Three of these directors are members of Gashland United Methodist Church.
Since the facility was officially dedicated in the spring of 1997, the Ropes Challenge Tower has been serving close to 1000 youth each summer, including participants from all types of youth organizations.
Climbing, Rappelling, and Ropes Course activities are some of the fastest growing recreational sports in the country, all of which promote both personal development and team building concepts. Our basic program includes flat wall rappelling, free-rappel (or helicopter) rappelling, rock-climbing, and zip-lining. Our custom programs include caving ladder challenge, rope ascension, cargo-net climb, initiative games and other low-course elements. Any one or all of these activities can be facilitated as a stand-alone customized workshop, or part of a half-day, full-day, or two-day event.
Many corporations are spending thousands of dollars per year on self-confidence and team building workshops for their employees. These “Outdoor Adventure” activities are fast becoming an integral part of corporate employee development. Our program is based on these concepts with youth development being the primary focus.
We have been serving Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, Camp Fire Boys & Girls, Church Youth Groups, Volunteer Fire & Rescue Groups, School Groups, and Youth-at-Risk organizations.
